Research shows that about 11% of people with tattoos ultimately get their tattoos removed at some point. If you are also planning to get yours removed, it’s necessary to understand that tremendous results can only achieved by proper post-care.
The dermatologist will do their job by breaking up the ink in your skin but it is your responsibility to make sure your skin receives the care it needs to heal once you go home.
If you fail to take good care of your skin after laser tattoo removal, it could result in an infection or other side effects. That’s why we are going to cover some important aftercare tips you can follow after getting tattoo removal treatments.
5 Tips To Follow After Laser Tattoo Removal
Keep the area clean
The treated area must be kept clean and dry at all times. You can use any soap and water to lightly clean it, and then pat it dry. Remember, “gentle” is the operative word here.
Don’t use any rubbing motions while applying soap or drying with a towel. Once cleaned, cover the area with an antibiotic ointment and bandage the first 3 days following the laser tattoo removal. Make sure you change bandage every day.
Avoid soaking the area in water
It is recommended to avoid any activities where the treated area can be soaked in the water. This includes swimming, baths, hot tubs, pools, etc. You can take showers but make sure the treated area doesn’t get directly hit by the water pressure.
Allow the scabbing
Most of us have this tendency to pop and pick the blisters and scabs, no matter how many times we are told not to do that. Well, in this case, you will have to control your urges or you will end up with infections.
After tattoo removal treatments, your body is going to be working hard to remove the ink from your skin. This may result in blistering or scabbing. But don’t worry, these will heal on their own. Once the blister/scab naturally pops or falls off, apply an antibiotic ointment on it after 24 hours.
Avoid taking aspirin
It is common for patients to feel slight discomfort after the tattoo removal treatments. If you experience the same, you can take some Tylenol (after talking with your doctor), but don’t take any blood thinners like aspirin. This may increase the risk of bleeding or bruising.
And if you feel any swelling or itchiness on the treated area, you can apply some vitamin E oil or a cold compress to sooth it.
Avoid exposure to sun
Once your laser tattoo removal session is complete, you should avoid excessive sun exposure until your skin has completely healed. This goes for tanning activities as well. And if you must go out, cover the area with clothing and apply a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
